Light Up Salone

 Celebrating 10 Years of Transforming Lives in Sierra Leone by Transform Salone

Transform Salone started working in Sierra Leone in 2014. Over the years the charity has sponsored many children through primary, secondary and tertiary education and also vocational training programmes. In addition, Transform Salone has donated rice to families in acute crisis and provided emergency medical care. It has also supplied schools with hand washing stations and thousands of pencils and other stationary. In order to celebrate this achievement we have decided on a project to light up villages in the provinces.

Sierra Leone is a small West African country with a population of 8 million. It is one of the world's poorest nations with a life expectancy of 55 years. Only 40% of people complete education and are able to read and write. It is estimated that 89% of the population live in food insecurity and there is widespread malnutrition. The National Geographic has recently said that Sierra Leone is the worst place in the world to be a girl and 10% of children don't make it past the age of 5. 
In that context we have decided to work with community leaders and elders to provide solar lighting in some villages in the provinces. Lighting will have a massive impact in these communities. None of the villages have electricity therefore the day ends with sundown at 7:00pm. Providing solar lighting will enable children to study and complete homework, will allow trading to continue, will facilitate community activities and will contribute to safety of women and young girls. The project will be sustainable and also support the local economy.

We have identified 4 villages. Each village has between 100 and 500 residents and between 20 and 61 houses. Two of the villages have schools. We are looking to provide approximately 80 solar panels to be set as streetlights. 

We also plan to fit solar lighting to the base of the charity which will reduce running costs and enable more funds to be directed to the work in Salone, as well as increasing the safety of the charity’s compound.
